Georgia Tech – CS6035 Review
Georgia Tech - CS6035 Review
I started a master program a the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) in the spring of 2019. This is a Cybersecurity masters offered through the School of Computer Science. This is an online masters program.
CS6035 - Intro to Info Security
My initial thoughts were that an introduction to information security class would be relatively easy. I say easy because I have been in the industry for more than 15 years. I have been CISSP certified for over 10 years. I have an undergraduate degree in Computer Science. I tinker on new technology and blog.
Boy was I surprised with this class! It was NOT easy.
At least 1 chapter of required reading each week
A least 1 but typically 2 lectures per week.
Consists of two exams (midterm and final) that draws from the reading and lectures.
Consists of four projects. These make up 60% of the grade and are the main emphasis of the class. These were across 4 different technology areas:
Most of these are delivered via a crafted virtual machine to control the environment and prevent us from doing something stupid.
These were by far the most interesting part of the class. They weren't necessarily difficult but they were. These require independent research of the topics to fill your gaps. There was a general high level description in the lectures but not enough to complete the projects. The expectation is that students must determine their gaps and research on their own.
Each project took me several days to complete which included the research, coding, testing, writing a report, and finally the submission.
One item that might surprise new students is that you MUST make a B or better in the core classes.
If you are a prespective student be prepared. You WILL code in this program. You WILL do independent research. You WILL be expected to achieve exceptional results (B or better). You WILL be challenged in at least one of the projects if not all.
Do the work. Read the book. Listen to the lectures. Start projects early. Ask for help when you get stuck. If you do all these things and you find this topic interesting. You will enjoy this class.
